Fastener guidance
How can galling be reduced when assembling stainless steel fasteners?
Updated 2026-11-01 · JINSHANG
Galling is adhesive wear that can occur as mating threads slide under pressure. Friction can disrupt their surface films and lead to local metal adhesion, making a fastener bind during tightening.
To reduce the risk, keep threads clean and undamaged, align parts correctly, and tighten at a controlled, slower speed rather than using high-speed assembly. A suitable lubricant or coating may help when compatible with the application. Because lubrication changes the torque–tension relationship, have the specified tightening torque and preload reviewed before use. Material and finish combinations also affect galling risk.
Follow the fastener manufacturer’s installation guidance and the joint designer’s requirements; no single measure suits every assembly.
